  3. Anna's new number

Texting Anna now feels like texting family

Anna has a new number, and she reacts to your messages, so you know she's on it. On iPhone, you can invite her to your family group chat and watch for her typing dots.

Move to new number

It takes a few seconds. Until you move, nothing changes.

A family group chat with Anna in it. Dan asks who can pick up Ella from swim on Thursday, Mia asks Anna to check, Anna reacts with a heart, replies under Dan's question with a plan, and starts typing again when Ella asks about a smoothie.

Which number are you on?

Open the Anna app and go to Settings, then Text messages. If you see Move to the new number, you're still on the old one.

Still on the old number

Move in a few seconds

On the phone you text Anna from:

  1. 1

Tap Move to new number below, or open the Anna app and go to Settings, then Text messages.

  2. 2

Tap Move to the new number, then Move.

  3. 3

Your Messages app opens with Hi Anna ready to send. Send it, and Anna replies from her new number.

Move to new number

Until you move, Anna keeps texting you from her current number.

Already on the new number

You're all set

Everything already comes from Anna's new number. Save her contact card from your chat with her, so she shows up by name, then invite her to your group chats.

  • Your tasks, reminders and daily briefs carry on as before.

  • Anna reacts to your messages and lets you know she's read them.

  • On iPhone, you'll also see her typing dots and can invite her to your group chats.

What the new number can do

Texting Anna feels more like texting a person. Most of this works on every phone, and each card says where it works.

Group chats

iPhone

Invite Anna to your chat with your partner, or any group chat. She joins only when you invite her, and helps when she's needed.

Reactions

iPhone and Android

Anna reacts to your message as soon as she's on it, so you know it landed.

Read receipts

iPhone and Android

You can see when Anna has read your message.

Typing dots

iPhone

See when Anna is writing back, just like texting a person.

Threaded replies

iPhone group chats

In a busy group chat, Anna answers right under the message she's replying to.

Files and pictures

iPhone and Android

Send Anna a PDF, like the school term dates, and she reads it. She can send you pictures back too.

Long answers, all in one

iPhone and Android

A detailed answer arrives as one message, not cut into pieces.

Voice notes

iPhone and Android

Talk instead of typing. Send Anna a voice note and she replies in writing.

iPhone, Android and plain text

Your phone picks the best way to reach Anna on its own. Here's what each one means.

iPhone

iMessage | blue bubbles

Apple's chat over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Everything on this page works here, including group chats.

Android (RCS)

Google Messages | RCS chats on

Modern chat over data on Android. Reactions, read receipts, files, pictures and voice notes all work. Typing dots and group chats don't yet.

Plain text

Any phone | when neither is on

A regular text message, used when iMessage and RCS aren't available. Anna still answers, just without the extras.

Invite Anna to a group chat

Group chats work in iMessage, so everyone in the group needs to be on iMessage for now. Anna joins only when you invite her.

  1. 1

Make sure you're on Anna's new number, and save her to your contacts from your chat with her.

  2. 2

Open the group chat in Messages, tap the group's name at the top, then Add Member.

  3. 3

Type Anna and choose her. For a chat with just your partner, start a new message to your partner and Anna instead.

  4. 4

Send any message in the group. Anna says hello once, then helps whenever she's needed.

What Anna says when she joins
Hi everyone, I'm Anna, Mia's AI assistant. I read the messages here so I can help. If you'd rather I leave, ask Mia to remove me.

Good to know

  • Whoever invites Anna needs to be on her new number.

  • She can join a group only when everyone in it is on iMessage.

  • If someone would rather she left, take her out of the group, like anyone else.

How Anna behaves in a group

You don't need to tag her. Anna answers when someone asks her something, or asks the group a question she can clearly help with. Everyday chat, she leaves alone.

Family-only groups

When everyone in the chat is part of your Anna family, she can help with family things, like your calendar and your tasks.

Groups with friends

When anyone outside your family is in the chat, Anna keeps your personal things private. She answers general questions, and takes anything personal, like your calendar, to your own chat with her.

What she keeps

Anna only reads group chats she's been invited to, and keeps group messages for 7 days. Remove her from the group at any time.

Questions

No. Moving is free, and there's nothing new to pay. On iPhone and on Android with RCS, texting Anna uses your data like any other chat app.

Yes. On Android, Anna's new number works best in Google Messages with RCS chats turned on. She reacts to your messages, you get read receipts, and you can send her files, pictures and voice notes. Typing dots and group chats are iPhone only for now.

In Google Messages, tap your profile picture, then Messages settings, then RCS chats, and turn it on. Without it, Anna's texts fall back to plain text messages and you lose the extras, like reactions and read receipts. Some phones and carriers have it off, so it's worth a quick check.

iMessage has to send from your phone number, not your Apple ID email. Go to Settings, then Apps, then Messages, then Send & Receive, and under "Start new conversations from" choose your phone number. Then send Hi Anna again.

Send Hi Anna from the number on your Anna account. On an iPhone with two lines, choose that number under "Start new conversations from" in Settings, then Apps, then Messages, then Send & Receive. On Android with two SIMs, send it from the SIM with that number.

Yes, in more places than before. The new number is a US number, and on iPhone and on Android with RCS it works from any country, like any chat app. The old number only texted the US, Canada and Australia. If your phone falls back to a plain text message, your carrier's usual international rates may apply.

Until you move, nothing changes, and Anna keeps texting you from it. After you move, if you text the old number, Anna will point you to her new one.

Yes. If you'd rather not tap a link, you can move inside the Anna app instead: go to Settings, then Text messages, and tap Move to the new number.

Reply STOP at any time and Anna stops texting you. Send her any message when you want to start again.
